Firefighter Medical Exams & NFPA 1582 Evaluations

NFPA 1582-informed candidate and annual firefighter physicals, SCBA respirator clearance, cardiac screening and return-to-duty evaluations for fire and EMS personnel.

  • NFPA 1582-informed candidate and annual exams
  • SCBA respirator clearance and fit testing
  • Cardiac screening and post-incident return to duty

Exams built around fireground demands

Firefighting is one of the most physiologically demanding jobs there is — heat stress, heavy PPE, SCBA and unpredictable exertion. We evaluate candidates and incumbents against those actual demands using the NFPA 1582 essential job tasks, not a generic physical.

  • Candidate and academy entry physicals
  • Annual and periodic incumbent evaluations
  • Essential job task (Category A/B condition) review
  • Vision, hearing and musculoskeletal assessment

Respiratory and cardiac fitness

SCBA use requires OSHA 1910.134 medical clearance, and cardiac events remain the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty death. We handle both in one visit.

  • Respirator medical evaluation and written clearance
  • Quantitative fit testing for SCBA facepieces
  • Spirometry and pulmonary function testing
  • Resting EKG and exercise stress (GXT) testing
  • Cardiovascular risk-factor counseling

Exposure surveillance and cancer screening support

Products of combustion, diesel exhaust and hazardous materials responses all carry long-term risk. We build surveillance around your department's exposure history and maintain the records that support presumptive claims later.

  • Baseline and periodic exposure documentation
  • Bloodborne pathogen and post-exposure management
  • Heavy metal, HAZMAT and laboratory panels
  • Immunization and titer tracking

Return to duty and fitness for duty

After injury, illness, surgery or a critical incident, we determine whether a member can safely resume full fireground duty — with clear restrictions and a reassessment plan when they cannot.

What to bring

  • Photo ID and your department's exam or NFPA 1582 form
  • List of medications, doses and treating providers
  • Glasses, contacts or hearing aids you use on duty
  • Records for any cardiac, pulmonary or orthopedic condition
